October is Cat Health Awareness Month. Our Guest blogger today is an LVH client with a new kitten :)

October 6, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionI am a client at Liberty Veterinary Hospital, and my 2 gorgeous cats have been going there for a long time now. Dr. Johnstone, Dr. Collins, and the entire staff at Liberty Veterinary Hospital do a wonderful job taking great care of them. I recently got a new kitten who I call “Little Guy”. During his appointment he’ll get a standard physical, vaccines, parasite screening, and start year round heartworm & flea prevention. It’s very important to treat him with prevention, making sure no unwanted parasites spread through the house. Though my other cats (Gus and Jacob) use prevention as well, parasites can still get into the house any time of the year. Over the years I’ve learned it’s better to be safe than sorry.

While my Little Guy is just starting out, I’ve also got to protect my adult cats too. Did you know that some of the most common and dangerous ailments for cats are urinary & kidney problems, hyperthyroidism, and heart disease? And that these diseases usually go unnoticed by most owners because cats rarely show signs of a health problem until its severe? I wouldn’t have known either, but luckily Dr. Johnstone & Dr. Collins do a great job educating me on proper feline care. Thanks to them, I’ve gotten my cats examined and tested regularly to make sure my 4-legged friends live as long and healthy of a life as possible.

Wrangler back again just getting the attention of my cat friends.

new optionCAT NIP!!CAT NIP!! CAT NIP!!

This week, we direct the Liberty Vet pet blog towards the felines. I’ve been a patient at LVH long enough that I speak cat too. So meow to all your feline friends. Let’s discuss senior cat health.

I am envious of my cat friends. They seem to age a lot more gracefully than us dogs. Maybe it is true that cats have nine lives. Like all of us including the humans, aging is inevitable. At some age though, my cat friends need more and longer naps. Their appetites decrease. Remember those incredible jumps they could make to the top of the refrigerator?? Well as they get older it might just be a jump to the couch.

Liberty Veterinary Hospital strongly recommends an exam every six months for cats of any age, but it’s especially important for senior cats. Remember, cats age much faster than humans. My feline friends are great actors when it comes to hiding pain. Catch an illness early and treatment may be more successful and possibly less expensive. Wait until a cat shows symptoms, and it can be another story. Liberty Vet Hospital has a senior wellness plan for felines. Maybe if you meow enough you will convince your owner to investigate. Have them stop in and pick up a brochure. Tell them to visit with the adoption cats while they do.

So, dogs and cats, watch for next week’s blog. Sorry about teasing the felines with cat nip. Did someone say squirrel?? Got to go!

This week Wrangler talks to us specifically about dogs as they age.

September 13, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionWoof, woof, Wrangler back to discuss senior pet wellness plans. This pet blog will have information on a dog’s senior health plan. Cats, retract your claws. Next week’s blog will be all about the felines.

So, a canine over 7 years old is in the equivalent of 40’s for a human life. Come on dog friends, we have all heard our owners and their friends discussing human ailments stemming from age. Gosh, even when they whisper, our dog ears pick up everything. Our owners hope for a pleasant retirement. So should we! Wouldn’t you all love to still chase animals, eat great food and nap every day?? Liberty Veterinary Hospital has this great plan for senior dogs.

What is this amazing plan? Well it includes physical and dental exams. We canines are very brave and quiet when it comes to pain. How many of us suffer in silence? The vets might see some weight loss, hear heart murmur or notice dental disease. Let’s talk blood. Complete blood chemistry will check the major organ systems in our bodies. Remember, there is more than just our stomachs!! How many of you have had an owner stick Tupperware under you to grab urine? What is that crazy person doing, right? Well a urinalysis can diagnose a lot, from diabetes to bladder stones. Have techs ever laid you on the table with that crazy camera over you? Smile and say cheese. Those are x-rays, & let the vet check your heart and lungs. Don’t forget eyes and blood pressure need checking too.

So, if you are a senior dog, bark to your owner about making you an appointment. Remember, just like humans, we need better wellness plans as we age. We also need senior care in our retirement. Ok felines, clean your fur, cough up some hairballs and read next week’s blog.

Wrangler is back with more great tips on Senior Health :)

September 6, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionWelcome to the new Liberty Veterinary Hospital pet blog. Howling hello. I am Wrangler, this month’s blogger, a long time patient and dog of one of the Liberty Vet techs. Sorry, I am not as good looking as Brett Favre in his Wrangler jeans.

I find it interesting that whenever older humans chat, their conversations drift to illnesses. Sure their bodies break down as they age. I am barking loudly for us animals. We develop health issues too when we reach our senior years. Humans joke that at age 40 their bodies start falling apart. For us dogs, our golden years start around 7 years of age. For my cat buddies, they reach retirement years after 9 yrs of age.

Hey humans, let me woof at you some topics that probably sound familiar. I’ve overheard my owners discuss high blood pressure. Guess what. We senior dogs can have that too. Diabetes? Bet my dog bones, I have canine and feline friends who are diabetic. Kidney failure? Ever find your pet accidentally sitting in pee? Yep, I’ve seen many an owner catching urine with Tupperware. They catch some pee to test it. Finding it difficult to see the squirrels? Can your pet still chew on those good old dog bones?

So remember, our bodies age too. This month the Liberty Vet dog blog will focus on senior canine and feline healthcare. I will howl about this until I am hoarse. Look for information next week on keeping senior pets healthy. Because of excellent vet care, I am still feeling youthful. Off to chase some squirrels. I learned my lesson not to chase the skunks. See you at the next blog!

Indy – How can you help me with this terrible itching and biting? Check out Indy’s final chapter on Pet Allergies

August 30, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionWoof, woof and hello again. Indy again, using my pet blog to educate all my dog and cat friends about allergies. So far, we discussed two types of allergies: inhalant and food allergies. Last, we need to discuss the allergy no dog or cat likes to admit they have. Are you severely itching? Are you biting at your behind?? Maybe your allergy is due to flea bites.

Yeah, I said it. Now calm down and stop howling or meowing. Don’t get all embarrassed. This problem can be resolved. Just one flea bite can be really irritating. Treatment isn’t that bad though. An antihistamine can ease the itch, and maybe you’ll get another pill treat. Maybe a medicated bath will help ease the itching. Ok, my cat friends wouldn’t enjoy a bath, but I actually like it. At least it is one on one time with your owner.

Once your symptoms are under control, a flea preventative isn’t just advised, it’s necessary! Liberty Vet now sells Bravecto. Most dogs actually like the taste of this an edible pill. Another amazing fact about Bravecto is that it only needs to be given every 3 months! My owner loves how simple that is.It even guards against ticks too. Don’t like pills? There are other topical flea products that help prevent fleas. Just have your owner ask your vet.

If your allergy is from a flea infestation, remember to bark at your owner to treat your home. Even after you get rid of the fleas in your fur, the whole area where you live needs to be treated to keep those nasty bloodsuckers from coming back! Liberty Vet carries products to help with that too.

Ok, I am done whining about the incessant scratching. Take care of it!Don’t wait too long. Remember, constant licking and scratching can lead to red, raw hot spots which can lead to infection. Don’t be inconvenienced any more. Don’t stop chasing that squirrel to itch. Don’t be impolite and lick or scratch in public . Tell your owner to take you down to the vet. Oh no, a jogger passing by…off and running!!! Good luck and watch for the next pet blog.

Meet our guest blogger – Wrangler! He’s going to share with us what it is like to be a senior pet :)

August 30, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionGlad all my friends are inside in the air conditioning. My favorite place to nap is over a vent this time of year. Don’t know why my owners complain about their energy bill. August is the month of “dog days of summer.” So I’m going to woof about the Liberty Veterinary Hospital senior wellness plans.

Our veterinarians recommend a physical two times a year. Many problems can be found early through exams. Are you getting too skinny? How does your skin look, any bumps? Want to keep chewing dog bones? A dental exam can reveal dental disease that may cause pain. Blood work sounds scary, but the LVH techs will gently collect a sample. Why blood work? Diabetes, liver or kidney disease and other weird stuff may be detected. You could say the senior wellness plans allow the veterinarians to play detective. Cool, that sort of makes me a police dog. It may seem weird when your owner puts a cup into your urine stream. For goodness sake, just let us pee! Well a urine test can help diagnose kidney failure, urinary tract infection, liver disease or bladder stones.

I can see the hair standing up on your back. Don’t stress out. It is a lot of information. The senior wellness plan covers even more: blood pressure, x-rays, thyroid test and eye exams. On your next walk, drag your owner into Liberty Veterinary Hospital to get a brochure. Remember there is a senior wellness plan for canines AND felines.

So cat and dog friends relax and enjoy the summer. Fall is coming soon and more topics to check out in the LVH dog blog. Remember to stay out of those hot cars this summer. Stay cool in these dog days of summer!

Flea Allergy

An antihistamine can ease the itch, and maybe you’ll get another treat with it: pill pocket, cheese or yummy pill wrap. Maybe a medicated bath will help ease the itching. Ok, my cat friends wouldn’t enjoy a bath, but I actually like it. At least it is one on one time with your owner.

Food Allergy

July 24, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionWoof, woof. Indy back to bark about allergies. So, in my last blog, we discussed allergies due to pollen and mold. In this blog, we need to discuss allergies due to food. Yep, I said it… food! Food is my favorite topic. Bacon, hamburger, hotdogs ….sorry I digress.   But did you know that certain foods can bring on allergies that affect the skin?

Suppose your scratching, biting, paw chewing and constant licking persists beyond allergy season and you have tried everything with no relief. Your owner may need to talk to your veterinarian about your diet. Some food such as beef, pork, chicken, milk, whey, eggs, fish, corn, soy, wheat or preservatives could be upsetting your digestive track. It’s a bummer because those are some good foods. That list contains some of my personal favorites. My owner has always told the kids I can’t eat table scraps. As much as I hate to admit it, most “people foods” are bad for us dogs. Are you kidding?! I can’t eat hotdogs or bacon? Turns out a lot of people foods can cause pancreatitis in dogs. That is a topic for another blog though. Unfortunately, dogs are allergic to some of the foods listed above. How do you know? The veterinarian will probably have you start a food trial. At Liberty Vet, the shelves are full of Royal Canin food products. You and your vet just need to find the right food for your tummy.

I’ll be honest… I’m a glutton. Once, I chewed open a new bag of food and ate ¾ of it in one sitting. I did not feel very good the next day. My owner was angry AND worried. Turns out my eyes are not bigger than my stomach. So, believe me, I know a lot of us dogs LOVE, LOVE, LOVE food. You need to decide which is the worse of two evils: giving up treats and table scraps, or painful hot spots from licking and scratching. I am going with the new diet because I’m always looking to be comfortable, healthy and impress my lady friend, Betty (she’s one sexy boxer).

I need to run, I see the bunnies again. Next blog, we will discuss one more cause of allergies: the dreaded flea bite.

Inhalant Allergy

July 24, 2015 by Liberty Vet Leave a Comment

new optionWoof, woof (that’s hello is dog language). Indy here.

I’m a long time patient at Liberty Veterinary Hospital, & my owner is also a LVH receptionist.  I am a senior dog and have seen a lot in my days. So I feel like I need to give some advice to those younger dogs or cats on this incessant licking and scratching that I keep seeing.  I did it too in my early years. No need to suffer or be embarrassed. Can’t chase squirrels if you have to stop and itch. Liberty Vet is starting a pet blog, so great opportunity for me to impart my wisdom.

My vet said we cats and dogs can have allergies from three sources: inhalant (stuff we breathe in), food and flea bites. Are you scratching, biting, chewing at your feet or constantly licking?? How about those ears? Are the flaps red and hot? It is not a good look. Well, if it is happening seasonally, you might be allergic to pollen. If it happens year round, you might be allergic to mold or dust. Our seasonal allergies don’t affect us like they do people.   My owner’s son has allergies and he gets runny noses and itchy eyes.   Our inhalant allergies affect our skin instead. Come see my vet for advice. Treatment may include simply taking a daily antihistamine. I know it is a big word, but I am a sheltie and pretty smart. If you don’t take pills as easily as I do, try it in a yummy pill pocket or my personal favorite, cheese.  You might need a weekly bath with gentle shampoo to give more relief. Liberty Vet has some great shampoos and sprays. My friend Betty (A Boxer mix) uses one called Pramasoothe+ HC spray. The veterinarians will direct your owner to the product that will help your symptoms best. Sometimes, but not always, if the allergies are severe, the veterinarian may need to give you an injection. It sounds scary, but the techs and doctors at Liberty Vet have that magic touch.

Pass on this information to your owners. There is a lot to consider. Inhalant allergies are bothersome, but you CAN find relief. Don’t wait too long and get caught licking or scratching in public. That is embarrassing.   Also, if you wait too long, you can lick or scratch your skin raw and create hot spots which hurt! So, enough for this blog. I need to go chase some bunnies. Next blog I’ll tell you about food allergies. Are you eating the right food??

Received estimate ahead of time for Boarding, special handling, medication, extra playtime with staff ahead of time; I chose services I wanted; actual cost was in the middle – first time a very old, sick cat was boarded and they did an excellent job. They’ve cared for him his whole life.

On this visit our two dogs were due for a vaccination. The vet tech was friendly and gentle with our dogs and they were comfortable and unafraid. The vet tech spent all the time needed to answer my questions and I asked if they could also have their nails trimmed. I forgot to ask at the time I made the appointment but the tech said it was no problem and she trimmed their nails.  We have taken our dogs and rabbits to Liberty Vet for years. The staff is very friendly and professional and knows us and our pets by name. We trust Liberty Vet for our dogs health care and boarding needs. I would highly recommend Liberty Vet as your primary vet for care and boarding of your pets.

We had one of our dogs' teeth cleaned. We've had several vet visits and grooming done here also.  The teeth cleaning went great. Our dog had to have one tooth pulled, and I thought the price was very reasonable. Having lived with these dogs in two other states, I think Liberty Vet provides a great service at a reasonable price.

Surgery for my mini-schnauzer on her kidney stones and blockage. Also cleaning and fixing her teeth.  Very caring. Kept her before the surgery when she became very ill and cured her before doing anything else. They kept me up to date along the way. Calling many times during the day. Very good follow up and let me know how to prevent the problem from happening again.

We have been going to Liberty Veterinary Clinic for 17+ years. Even though we have moved 3 times we now literally pass another clinic around the corner to drive 30 minutes to Liberty. They are that good. We have taken our dog, Sidney, to Liberty from his first puppy check up to every vaccination and ear infection up to the very end. It was an extremely hard decision to have to put our Sid to sleep, but they handled it with such care, compassion and respect we will be forever grateful. You could not do better for your pet than Liberty Veterinary Clinic. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Dr. Collins, I just wanted to thank you so much for the care you and your team gave my dog, Bachelor, during his final months. You always took the time to explain his condition and what options we had. After the difficult decision was made to put him to rest, I asked your recommendation about my surviving dog, Roxy. Your advice was outstanding. …..She was there when he went down and came over to him after he passed. She sniffed him and seemed to understand that he was no longer living. …..We just can’t thank you enough for everything you and your terrific staff did for us during that difficult afternoon. And thanks so much for the Clay Paw and card. It truly means a lot.

The best vet I've ever been to...Both doctors are great, the staff really cares...Alicia was amazing and took the time to talk to me for 30 minutes probably for a follow-up call.  They took plenty of time with us and REALLY care...If that's what you want, then this is the place to go!

I have been going to Liberty Vet since the day they opened. They are the most caring people I have ever dealt with. We boarded our diabetic cat there for over 12 years when we went on vacation. I never worried about Maggie May in their care (Thank You Nick). She lived to 16 and our 17 year old cat goes there. The one thing I like is that it is quiet when you walk in. You do not hear dogs barking nor the smell that other places have. Highly recommend.

Liberty Veterinary Hospital on Yankee Rd is another great place. AHAA accredited, boarding and grooming services as well. I've been going there for years. Great people!

Liberty Veterinary Clinic is absolutely the best I have been to. I currently take my three cats there and they treat them with such care. It is very clean, and all the staff are very friendly. You have a very short wait time and they get you into a private room for you and your pet immediately. The nurses and doctor all come from the back areas and are all very well informed in all areas of animals. I was so pleased.  The pricing wasn't that bad either, not higher or lower than what I paid in other locations.  For the Intelligence of the staff, the privacy of the rooms for my animals, it was well worth it and I will be back for years to come with all my animals.

The staff of Liberty Veterinary Hospital is great! And the rapport is just what I wanted. If there had been none, then I might not have kept them as my dogs' doctors. They give options for their care and procedures. Only once was I upset when a previous doctor was working there and is not any longer. I was fortunate to have been at the "Open House" when it originated and just love the doctors' concern for pets. Dr. Collins, as well as Dr. Johnstone, are compassionate about animals as if they were their own. I've been with them since the beginning.
